Of the many benefits available to servicemembers and their families, one of the most often overlooked is the Department of Defense Adoption Reimbursement Program. Currently, the reimbursement rate is $2,000 per adoptive child, but no more than $5,000 per year. This applies to national and international adoptions.
The fees that can be reimbursed are any adoption agency fees, counseling fees for the birth parents that may be required, medical costs, temporary foster care, as well as legal expenses including court costs.
This is in addition to any special needs subsidies or other benefits that may be available as a result of the adoption.
