The Virginia Department of Health reported that one-third of all homicides that occurred in the state between 1997 and 2007 were the result of family or intimate partner discord or violence.
There were 1, 232 domestic homicides during the period.
56 percent of the homicides involved the use of a firearm.
The western part of the state and Hampton Roads had the highest rates of domestic homicide.
